In 1907, a group of working class, Yiddish-speaking, Jewish immigrants, led by Isidor
Berliner, a barber, launched a campaign to open a Jewish hosptial in the East End of
London. Their aim was to provide comfort for Jewish patients who did not speak
English and felt uneasy in a non-Jewish environment. Berliner and his friends, who
collected one shilling and sixpence at their inaugural meeting, were opposed by the
leadership of the Jewish community, by Viscount Knutsford the Chairman of the London
Hospital, and by the King's Fund. PriceHardback: £20.00
